Somewhere between six and twelve months, and going before her first heat is a perfectly good choice. Her answer is genuinely different from a male Corgi's — and the reason why is one of the odder things I have come across in this research.
On the male page I ask Corgi owners to wait until around twelve months, because males neutered before six months showed disc disease at roughly six times the intact rate. That is a real finding and I act on it.
Her page says something different, and I want to show you the bit that does not add up rather than quietly leaving it out.
Intact Corgi females in that study had disc disease at about 8%. Intact males, about 3%. So she starts from roughly double his baseline risk.
And yet the effect of neutering showed up only in him. In females, spaying at any age made no evident difference at all. Higher starting risk, no timing effect. Lower starting risk, a timing effect. That is backwards from anything I would have predicted.

The most likely explanation is dull: these are small groups and small groups are noisy. But I would rather say that than build you a confident mechanism out of a result I do not really understand.
What the research actually shows
The Corgi is one of the 35 breeds in the UC Davis neutering study, with the Pembroke and Cardigan varieties analysed together — 50 intact and 70 spayed females. Because these are long-backed dogs, the researchers tracked intervertebral disc disease alongside the usual hips, elbows and cruciate ligaments.
For females: conventional joint disorders around 6% in intact dogs with no significant increase from spaying. Cancers around 6% in intact females, again with no increase. Disc disease about 8% in intact females, with no evident increase at any spay age. And no spayed female developed urinary incontinence.
The study's guideline for Corgi females follows directly: lacking any noticeable increase in joint disorders, disc disease or cancers with spaying, those wishing to spay should decide on the appropriate age. There is no age it advises against.
On the sample size, which is the honest caveat here as on the male side: 70 spayed females split across four age bands leaves a small number in each. So "no evident increase" is genuinely reassuring but not conclusive — a modest real effect could hide in groups that size. What tips me toward taking it at face value is that acting on the alternative would cost her something definite. Waiting further does not protect a back the study says spaying does not threaten; it just costs mammary protection.
Which leaves the decision resting on the benefits that were never in question.
So what does decide it?
Mammary tumours. Spaying before the first heat is associated with substantially lower mammary tumour risk than spaying after one or two cycles, and the protection erodes with each cycle. This is the main argument for going toward the earlier end of the window.
Pyometra. A uterine infection of intact females, typically in middle age and often in the weeks after a heat. It makes them dangerously ill and means emergency surgery on a sick older dog. Spaying removes the possibility entirely, and every cycle she has is another opportunity for it.
And the practical side. If letting her have a heat cycle at home is genuinely awkward for you, that is a real consideration and not a frivolous one. In a breed where the evidence gives you a free choice, your circumstances are a legitimate part of the decision rather than something to feel guilty about.
What I recommend
Where I deviate. If she has any history of back pain already, tell me before we schedule — it does not change whether we spay her, but it changes how I want her lifted, handled and rested afterward. If she has already had a heat, we wait until it has finished and things have settled, usually two to three months, rather than operating during it. And if your household includes an intact male, that tends to settle the timing on its own.
The thing I would rather you focused on. Whatever we decide about the date, keep her lean. She is a herding breed with a herding breed's appetite, built long and low, and she will need meaningfully fewer calories after her spay. Weight is the one thing about her back that you control completely, and it will matter far more over fourteen years than whether we did this at seven months or eleven.
No honest veterinarian can hand you an exact date without meeting your dog. Bring her in and we will settle it together.
How I do the surgery
At twenty-five to thirty pounds the laparoscopic advantage is moderate rather than dramatic — the strongest case for it is in large dogs, where a conventional spay means a long abdominal incision and the keyhole approach spares much of it. Where it earns its place at her size is the recovery: less tissue disturbed generally means less post-operative soreness and a quicker return to normal, which is worth having in a dog who takes badly to being told to settle down for a fortnight. Corgis, in my experience, take that instruction very badly indeed.
What the day looks like
She comes in that morning having skipped breakfast, has pre-anaesthetic bloodwork and an IV catheter, and is monitored continuously while she is under. I do the surgery myself — I have been a solo veterinarian since 1998, so the person who examined her and the person holding the instruments are the same person. She goes home the same day with pain medication, closed with absorbable suture and surgical glue, so there is nothing to remove later.
One Corgi-specific note on recovery: the restriction I ask for afterward is not only about the incision. No jumping on or off furniture, and carrying her up and down stairs, is good practice for this breed's back at any time and matters more while she is sore and moving awkwardly. In females the researchers found no evident increase from spaying at any age, and their guideline is that you should choose whatever age suits you. I could invent a reason to be cautious with her anyway, but it would be invention rather than evidence, and the cost of that caution would be real: every cycle she waits erodes her mammary-tumour protection.
No — and this is the part I find genuinely strange. Intact Corgi females in that dataset had disc disease at about 8%, roughly double the 3% in intact males. Going before her first heat gives the strongest mammary-tumour protection, which is a real and well-established benefit, and nothing in this breed's data argues against it. If you would rather let her finish growing first, twelve months is equally defensible — she is a sturdy dog and the study found no penalty either way. What I would not do is push her out past that on a worry the evidence does not support.

Those are the costs of waiting, and in this breed there is nothing on the other side of the scale to weigh them against.
In my experience it is the single most common thing I end up correcting in this breed, and it matters more here than in a dog built normally. She is a herding breed with a herding breed's appetite and drive to work, in a body that is long, low and slung between two sets of short legs — so every extra pound acts directly on the discs in between. She will need meaningfully fewer calories after her spay, and if nothing changes she will gain. Cut her portion by roughly ten to twenty percent once she has healed and judge her by her outline: a visible waist from above, and ribs you can feel easily under a thin layer.
It is a reasonable option and at twenty-five to thirty pounds the benefit is moderate. The strongest case for the keyhole approach is in large dogs, where a conventional spay means a long abdominal incision. At her size the traditional incision is already fairly modest. Where it earns its place is that less tissue disturbance generally means less post-operative soreness and a smoother recovery — which is worth something in a dog who does not take gracefully to two weeks of being told to settle down, and Corgis rarely do.
