Around twelve months, and definitely not before six. This is one of the few breeds where the research found that neuter timing genuinely affects the back — which makes it the exact opposite of the other long-backed breed I write about here.
I write about two long-backed breeds on this site, and they gave the researchers opposite answers to the same question. I find that genuinely interesting, and it is the reason this page exists rather than pointing you at the other one.
On the Dachshund page I tell owners that disc disease is overwhelmingly genetic, that it dominates the breed's medical picture, and that neutering makes no difference to it at any age. All of that is what the study found.
In Corgis, the same study found males neutered before six months had disc disease at about 18%, against 3% in intact males. Same shape of dog. Same cartilage genetics. Opposite result.

I do not have a tidy explanation for the difference, and I would be sceptical of anyone who offered one. What I can tell you is what I do about it, and why the answer does not require the finding to be certain.
What the research actually shows
The Corgi is one of the 35 breeds in the UC Davis neutering study, with the Pembroke and Cardigan varieties analysed together — 42 intact and 78 neutered males. As with the Dachshund, the researchers sensibly tracked intervertebral disc disease alongside the usual hips, elbows and cruciate ligaments, because in a dog built like this the spine is the point.
The conventional joint disorders were unremarkable: about 5% in intact males, with no significant increase from neutering at any age. Cancers likewise, around 5% in intact males with no increase. Disc disease in intact males ran at about 3% — and in males neutered before six months, about 18%.
Not as much as it looks. Seventy-eight neutered males split across four neuter-age bands leaves a small group in each, and the paper does not publish the per-band counts — so 18% of the under-six-months band is a handful of dogs rather than a solid statistic.
What stops me dismissing it is that the direction makes mechanical sense. Removing hormones before the growth plates close changes how the skeleton finishes, and a dog built like a bridge span between two sets of short legs is exactly where you would expect that to matter. Small evidence, plausible mechanism, and a precaution that costs nothing — that combination is enough for me.
The study's guideline for Corgi males follows the same logic: given the increase in disc disease with neutering under six months, neuter beyond six months. I go further than that, and I will say why.
What I recommend
Why I go past the guideline. The finding rests on few dogs, so I do not know precisely where its edge is. If the effect is real and I neuter him at seven months, I am relying on a boundary drawn through a small sample. Twelve months puts him comfortably clear of it, his skeleton is finished, and waiting costs a male dog nothing at all — no pyometra risk, no mammary clock running down. When the precaution is free I take more of it than the minimum.
Where behaviour overrides it. If he starts marking indoors, mounting persistently, escaping the yard or showing hormonally driven tension with other males, bring him in and we will move sooner. A dog succeeding in his home matters more than a margin. And an undescended testicle changes the plan entirely — that comes out on its own timetable rather than waiting for a birthday.

Beyond the surgery date
Getting the timing right is worth a modest amount. These are worth more, and they compound over a fourteen-year life.
And know the signs, because with disc disease the difference between a dog who walks again and one who does not is often measured in hours. Reluctance to jump or do stairs, a hunched back, yelping when lifted, or being unusually still are the early ones. Wobbliness, crossing the back legs, scuffing nails or knuckling a foot means get seen today. Back legs that will not work at all, or an inability to pass urine, is an emergency that evening.
What the day looks like
A neuter is the shorter and simpler of the two surgeries — the testicles are external, so it is one small incision just in front of the scrotum and a fraction of the time an abdominal operation takes. That is also why there is no laparoscopic version worth offering, unlike a laparoscopic spay where the alternative is a long abdominal incision.
He skips breakfast that morning, has pre-anaesthetic bloodwork and an IV catheter, and is monitored continuously while he is under. I do the surgery myself; I have been a solo veterinarian since 1998. He goes home the same day with pain medication. The rest I ask for afterward is worth taking seriously in this breed for reasons beyond the incision — no jumping on or off furniture, and carrying him up and down stairs, is good practice for a Corgi at the best of times. Corgi neuter questions
Because that is what the data says, and I would rather report the inconsistency than smooth it over. Both breeds are long-backed, both have the same cartilage genetics behind their short legs, and the researchers tracked disc disease in both. In Dachshunds, neutering made no difference at any age — it is overwhelmingly a genetic disease and the timing simply does not touch it. In Corgis, males neutered before six months showed disc disease at about 18% against 3% in intact males. Same body shape, opposite result. I do not have a satisfying explanation for why, and I am suspicious of anyone who offers one confidently. What I can do is act on it, because acting costs nothing.
Directionally useful, numerically shaky, and worth treating that way. The study reports 78 neutered Corgi males in total, spread across four neuter-age bands, so whatever sat in the under-six-months group was a small number of dogs and 18% of it is a handful. The paper does not publish the per-band counts, so nobody reading it can be more precise than that. I suggest around twelve months, which is longer than the study strictly asks. Its guideline for Corgi males is simply to neuter beyond six months, and if you did it at eight I would not tell you that you got it wrong. My twelve months is me taking a free option: his growth plates finish closing around then, waiting costs a male dog essentially nothing, and if the finding is real I would rather be comfortably clear of the band it sits in than just past its edge. That extra margin is my judgement rather than the paper's conclusion, and you are entitled to weigh it differently.
Much the same as in any long-backed dog, and the early signs are easy to miss. Reluctance to jump or use stairs he managed yesterday. A hunched or tense back. Yelping when lifted or when he twists. Being unusually still and quiet. As it progresses you may see wobbliness in the back legs, crossing them over, scuffing the nails, or knuckling so the top of a foot turns under. Back legs that will not work at all, or a dog who cannot pass urine, is an emergency that evening rather than the next morning. Any hind-limb weakness or clumsiness in a Corgi is a same-day visit.
The same unglamorous things that work in every long-backed breed, and they matter more than the surgery date. Keep him genuinely lean — Corgis are enthusiastic eaters and gain weight easily, and every extra pound acts on the discs slung between his front and back ends. Stop the jumping down off sofas, beds and out of cars, since the landing impact is the most common way an episode starts; a ramp or steps solves it. Walk him on a harness rather than a neck collar. And support his whole body when you lift him, one hand under the chest and one under the hindquarters.
Yes. An undescended testicle sits at body temperature rather than a few degrees cooler, which carries a substantially higher risk of it becoming cancerous later in life, and it cannot be monitored by feel because you cannot examine what you cannot reach. If he is past six months and it has not descended, it is not going to. That gets scheduled on its own timetable rather than waiting for twelve months, and it is a somewhat more involved surgery than a routine neuter because I have to go and find it first.
