My Dog Is Vomiting : When Does It Require a Vet Visit?
If your dog is vomiting, you're probably wondering the same thing every pet owner wonders: Is this serious, or will it pass on its own?
The honest answer is : it depends. As a veterinarian who's been treating dogs in the Cypress, TX area for over 25 years, I've seen everything from a dog who ate grass and felt better in an hour to dogs who came in with a vomiting episode that turned out to be a life-threatening blockage. Knowing the difference matters.
Vomiting That Can Often Wait Until Morning
If your dog vomited once or twice and is otherwise acting normal : alert, still drinking water, no bloating, no blood : it's reasonable to monitor them at home for a few hours. Withhold food for a few hours, offer small amounts of water, and keep a close eye on their behavior.
Come In Today : Don't Wait
Call us immediately if your dog is experiencing any of the following:
- Vomiting repeatedly (more than 2–3 times in a few hours)
- Blood in the vomit : even a small amount
- A distended or bloated-looking belly
- Extreme lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting combined with diarrhea
- Known or suspected ingestion of something toxic (medications, xylitol, grapes, raisins, household chemicals)
- A large or deep-chested breed with unproductive retching : this can be bloat (GDV), which is a genuine emergency
What We'll Do at Hearthstone
When you bring your dog in, we'll do a thorough physical exam, discuss what they may have eaten, and run diagnostics if needed : bloodwork, X-rays, or abdominal palpation depending on what we find. Our goal is always to give you a clear answer and a real plan, not just send you home with a "wait and see."
