Cruciate Ligament Injuries in Dogs
If we've just checked your dog's knee, start here. Copper shows what the cruciate ligament does, what happens when it tears, and why we try rest before surgery.
The short version
- Two ligaments cross like an X inside the knee. The cruciate keeps the shin bone from sliding forward under the thigh bone.
- In dogs it usually wears out slowly, then gives way with a small jump or a bad step.
- A strain gets 10 to 14 days of strict rest and pain medicine first. Leash walks only, with no running, jumping or stairs.
- If it isn't improving by then, or the tear is complete, the next step is an orthopedic surgeon, usually for a TPLO.

Dr. Pelton explains the 3 causes of itching/allergies
Is your dog constantly itching, licking, or getting ear infections? In this comprehensive video, Dr. Steve Pelton of Hearthstone Animal Clinic walks you through the real causes of allergies in dogs—and what truly helps.
