    When to seek emergency care

    Before you get there

    Basic first aid

    These are stopgaps only. They do not replace emergency veterinary care, get to a vet as fast as you safely can.

    Bleeding

    Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth. Don't remove embedded objects.

    Choking

    Open the mouth, remove visible objects. Don't push anything further back.

    Poisoning

    Contact us or poison control right away. Don't induce vomiting unless told to.

    Burns

    Cool with cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. No ice, no butter.

    Seizures

    Keep your pet safe from injury. Don't put anything in their mouth.

    Trouble breathing

    Keep calm and cool, clear the airway if possible, and transport immediately.
