The Heart and Soul of a Solo Vet Practice: A Message from Dr. Pelton
The Heart and Soul of a Solo Vet Practice: A Message from Dr. Pelton
First, let me say thank you. Thank you to the over 6,000 active clients who trust me to care for their beloved pets. It’s humbling and awe-inspiring to still be here as a solo practitioner—one doctor running the show—in an era where corporate veterinary medicine is the norm.
18 years ago, after experiencing the corporate world at VCA, I knew it wasn’t the path I wanted to take. I wanted to create a practice where pets, clients, and employees came first—not shareholders or profit margins.
Here’s the truth: This hasn’t been an easy road. While other practices have raised their prices substantially, I’ve worked hard to keep ours reasonable, absorbing skyrocketing costs for supplies, vendors, and medications over the years. At the same time, I’ve prioritized my team, providing 100% health insurance, competitive pay, and creating a work environment where people feel valued.
I could have sold out by now. Honestly, I could walk away with a lot of money. But that’s not what I’m about. Selling out would mean losing the personal touch that defines this clinic—something I could never allow. I believe in being here for my patients, my clients, and my employees, no matter how challenging it gets.
With over 6,000 active clients and their countless furry family members, we’ve built something truly special together. But as one person, I am only human. While we do everything we can to accommodate emergencies and urgent cases, same-day appointments aren’t always possible. My incredible team and I are constantly working to balance the growing demand while maintaining the quality of care your pets deserve.
So, when things feel frustrating—when the schedule fills faster than you’d like or an appointment isn’t immediately available—please remember: I’m holding the line. I’m standing strong as one of the last solo veterinarians, refusing to compromise on the care and compassion your pets receive.
To my amazing clients: Thank you for your patience, trust, and understanding. We’re in this together, and I’ll continue to do my best for you and your pets for as long as I can.
Warmly,
Dr. Steve Pelton
